Biography
Tamer Abu-Alam is an assistant professor of Sustainability Analytics at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. He gained a Doctorate of Science in 2010 in the field of Geosciences from the Institute of Earth Sciences, Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Austria. Abu-Alam published more than 40 academic papers. He coordinates several EU projects including CloudEARTHi (funded by the EIT HEI Initiative/co-funded by the European Union), SEEDplus (funded by the European Union) and Inspiring the Minds (funded by Erasmus+). The CloudEARTHi project, for example, contributes to building capacity at HEIs by using big data in Environmental Sciences, Sustainability and Circular Economy. The CloudEARTHi supported and accelerated, so far, 8 startups to move toward more sustainable and circular business models.
Abu-Alam is the chief editor of the Lithosphere journal and he has edited several special issues for top-ranked journals in the field of Earth Sciences. Abu-Alam research interest is focused on sustainability analytics, using big data and open sciences in addition to the tectonic evolution of the lithosphere and formation mechanisms of ore deposits. Abu-Alam is a council member and information officer of the Geological Society of Africa. As a member of the Arctic Sustainability Lab, Abu-Alam contributes to society by developing scenarios and analysing trends that enable the European Green Deal and the net-zero transition.
